On November 3, 2023, I was pleased to receive an email congratulating me on being part of the first class of the All in Africa program. This made me one of the young people from across the African continent to participate in this program, which was completely online. But let me say that it was a fantastic experience to have the opportunity to meet young Africans interested in open source.

What is All in Africa program?

The program is designed to provide African open-source enthusiasts and professionals with the skills and knowledge they need to contribute to the open-source software ecosystem. Through a combination of a designed curriculum, online workshops, and hackathons. You will also have the opportunity to work on real-world open-source projects and contribute to the growth of the open-source community in Africa.

This was the first time I learned deeply about open source, how it works, and the benefits of open source, and I had the opportunity to contribute to some open source projects, which taught us how to contribute to open source. One important thing we talked about in one of our sections was about how we contribute to open source, and that it’s not just necessary for us to contribute with code, but with design, translation, finding issues and reporting them, etc. There are several ways to contribute to open source, and it doesn’t matter how you contribute, the important thing is that you help an open source project that makes sense to you, and that, especially in a technology or project that you use, you contribute the mentality of helping other people with your contribution, that’s what open source exists for.

This is my first article on All in Africa, I will be sharing 2 or 3 more that I want to talk about open source, git and github. I will be talking about what I learned during the program, on a technical level, and let me say that I loved all the classes we had, the content was very clear and easy to understand. Practically the articles are based on my notes from each of the classes attended.

I want to thank the entire All in Africa program team, especially Ruth Ikegah and Maryblessing Okolie for all the support they are giving to this growing community. And all the All in Africa mentors, as well as all my colleagues.
